17-Dec-99: Junior Ladies Freeskate

2000 Pacific Coast Sectionals

Jr. Ladies Freeskate

I first saw Jordana Blesa and Felicia Beck at the '97 Junior Olympics. I was very impressed by both girls then. It is great fun for me to watch these little girls come along in the ranks, making it from the smaller competitions all the way to Nationals.

1st - Jordana Blesa
She wore a black dress with spaghetti straps, red trim. Skated to Strictly Ballroom. She had good speed and did four triples, including a salchow and a triple loop. She did two double axels, the second one in combination with a double toe although she put an extra step in between. She fell on a second triple sal, and landed a triple-double combo. She really attacks her jumps and skates with great confidence. She had good flow in her spiral sequence, but did not hold them long enough. She made good eye contact with the judges. Very clearly the top skater in this field.
2nd - Kim Ryan
Landed three triples, one in combination. She did an Ina Bauer into a triple loop, but fell on the triple loop. She did a double axel-double toe, but fell on a second double axel. She did a Russian Split into a double jump.
3rd - Beatrisa Liang
She wore a very pretty, flowery purple-and-white dress. At the beginning of the program she attempted three triples -- including a triple lutz -- and fell on all of them. She went on to land a double axel, double loop, Russian Split into a double/double combo and a triple sal/double toe combo. She did a very nice extended spiral at a dramatic point in the music. She moves very well, expresses the music well, and has good speed. She was 4th in the freeskate, 3rd overall, which given all of her problems seemed like a gift to me even though I like her very much.
4th - Felicia Beck
Wore a red dress, silver trim. Skated to some opera that I can't place the name of. Great presentation, smiling right at the judges. She did a double axel/triple sal combo, double loop/double loop combo, and a second double axel. She popped two jumps and fell on another triple. She is a very fast spinner. She did a camel/sit/layback/change/camel/sit combo, very fast. She has a very deep arch in her layback spin, good line in her spirals, good circular footwork. She did an Ina Bauer into a spread eagle. She ended the program with a very fast Bielmann spin, then did a blur scratch spin. She was 5th in the freeskate, 4th overall.
5th - Evelyn Kong
She wore a red costume with gold braid. Skated to Vangelis' China album. Started with a double axel with very nice flow coming out of it. Landed a triple sal/double toe combo, a double/double combo, a triple loop, and this really cool jump series double axel/double toe/double loop/double loop. That was spectacular! She fell on a triple loop and two-footed a second triple Salchow. Good footwork with a little leap in the middle of it. Did a lovely layback spin, moving her hands to the music. And she did a donut-on-a-stick spin. I thought she should have been higher, but then I think jump series are worth more than the judges do.
6th - Kara Glasson
I didn't see Kara (Marshall needed a major diaper change). This is what my husband wrote:
Hit first jump, hit triple/double combo, popped next, hit sal combo, double something, double lutz, double axel in combo. Footwork fair. Bad fall on last jump.
7th - Holly Bragg
I also didn't see Holly (I said it was a major diaper change). Again here are Richard's notes:
Blue & white costume, skating to Les Miserables. Jumps unsteady, slow, hit axel, popped something, circular footwork ok.
8th - Michelle Carlin
She wore a burgundy & black costume, skated to a tango. She landed one triple, a double loop, double lutz, double salchow. She did a spread eagle into a double axel, but fell on the axel. She had a nice combo spin, and did very low butterflys into a sit-spin with only one or two revolutions. Good line in the spread eagle. She lost speed as the program went along.
9th - Yong mi Lee
She wore a purple dress, skated to The Planets. Christy Ness is her coach. She did a double axel, popped a Salchow, a double- loop/double-loop/double-loop series, and did another double axel at the end of her program.
10th - Linnea Welton
She wore a light blue bodice with a very pretty multi-shaded blue skirt. She did a double lutz combo, fell on a double axel, did a double loop. She does a cool move where she does a pancake sit spin then pulls her leg up behind her into a catch-foot spin. She doesn't hold her spirals long enough, but she had a big smile throughout the program.
11th - Mindy Tseng
She wore a pretty white and gray costume, skated to The Four Seasons. She had a bad fall on a double lutz, two-footed her axel, but she landed a double loop and a triple sal.
12th - Kelsey Davidson
Midnight blue velvet dress, off of one shoulder. She fell on her second jump, landed a double axel, triple sal and a double loop/double loop combo as well as one other combo. She had lovely arms in her layback spin and a lovely Ina Bauer.
DNF - Katie McGuire
After placing 7th in the short program, Katie did not skate the long.
