2000 Pacific Coast Sectionals

Well I would have had plenty of chance to see the skating Thursday
night, but I took the wrong freeway on the way to the Ice Centre. An old
friend always warned me that having a baby turned your brains to
oatmeal, I should have believed her. Anyway I missed half the Novice
Ladies, including the leader Joan Cristobal. I really liked Joan last
year at Regionals so I am going to try really hard to catch her free.
Here is what I did see.
Novice Ladies Short
- Lanique Ruffin
- Skated to In the Mood. Hit a very solid double/double
combo, two footed the double axel, solo jump was double lutz. She has
nice extension and well centered combo spin, good presentation sold the
music and the program well, charming smile.
- Kailee Watson
- Spanish Music. She had really nice flow coming out of
her double axel, and a double axel/double toe combo. Her solo jump was
double lutz. She had really nice height in her flying sit spin, and a
good position in the spin, low to the ice. Unfortunately she lost a lot
of speed during the spin.
- Katie Mulvaney
- Skimpy costume, heavy on illusion material, very
inapropriate for a novice skater (or an adult skater for that matter.)
She did some lovely hand movements during her layback spin, dancing to
the music. She nailed the double axel, double/double combo and the solo
jump. She did a sit spin in the pancacke position, very nice spinner all
the way around, innovative. She is in second place quite deservedly.
- Erica Aden
- She skated to Gone With The Wind and wore a green velvet
dress with gold trim just like the dress Scarlett made out of curtains.
She had the most exquisite spiral seqence, great extension and line,
held out long enough and right to the crescendo of the music, just
beautiful. Unfortunately she couldn't jump. Fell on the combo, singled
the axel and wobbled a bit on the solo jump. she moves very gracefully
and has lovely positions in all her moves.
- Kristina Von Haartman
- She underotated her axel and fell. She looked
really scared I think nerves got the better of her, poor girl.
