Senior Ladies Short Program

Sasha Cohen - 1st

Wow this girl does take command of the ice. She wore a white dress.
Really pretty hand positions in the camel spin, moving them to the
music. Fabulous extensioni in her spirals, ends her spiral sequence with
a layback spiral into a Charlotte, breathtaking. Very fast pretty
layback spin. She landed a triple lutz/double toe combo, there was some
switching of edges going into, but it looked like she took off from the
outside edge. Nailed her triple flip out of footwork. She landed the
double axel and was holding the edge when the edge just slipped out from
under her and splat. Ended her program with a combo spin that climaxed
in a shotgun spin with her leg hugged up against her body. Very flexible
girl.

Kimberly Kilby - 2nd

She wore a red dress and skated to a spanish number. She landed the
triple lutz/double toe. She fell on a triple out of footwork, but of
course having a triple lutz at this level automatically puts you on top.
She did a cool knee-slide thing in the middle of her spiral sequence,
and she nailed the double axel. Good height in her jumps.

Cohen Duncan - 3rd

Burgundy halter dress, jazzy program with very flirtatious presentation.
Nailed sole triple jump but fell on the combo. really nice arch in her
layback spin, lovely arm positions. Nailed the double axel.

I have seen Stephanie perform some very entertaining programs at the
show at Ice Castle, so I knew she would have excellent presentation. She
did very dramatic presentation with great eye contact with both judges
and audience. Let's see she nailed the double axel, did a triple
sal/double toe combination, she went into it very slow and I thought she
would never pull it off, but the jump itself was fine. She 2 footed a
triple loop. She has very good extension in her spirals but doesn't hold
them long enough. Great layback and catch foot camel spin and a
wonderful no hands illusion spin at the end of the program. After years
of seeing her at Lake Arrowhead I really feel like I have watched her
grow up and I hope to see her at Nationals.

Elizabeth O'Donnell - 5th

Wore a purple dress that clashed with her beautiful red hair. Skated to
Four Seasons. Lordy this girl was fast! She had the best speed of anyone
in the competition no question. She did a really fast pretty layback
spin, well done in the classsic position. She landed a triple combo
though her leg flew about a bit after landing the triple, still it was
clean. Triple sal with great speed going in and out of the jump and
nailed the double axel. Very fast footwork sequence. Finished combo spin
with a blur scratch spin, the only scratch spin of the competition. If
this girl get the harder jumps she will be very hard to beat.

Susan Ng - 6th

She has grown a bit since Nationals and bobbed her hair into a longer
version of the Hamill haircut, she looks very cute with it. She had a
gorgeous black Spanish style costume with red trim and skated to a
tango. She fell on her triple combo and double footed her triple sal out
of footwork. Hit the double axel. Beautiful combo spin with a pancack
sit spin. Great spiral sequence with that amazing spiral in a layback
position. Realy good flow in the straightline footwork.
-
Kristin Bagby - 7th
-
She landed her jumps but I think she was penalized for some very slow
spins. She nailed the combo and the axel and in her triple out of
footwork she put her hands straight up over her head, very nice effect,
more dramatic than the tano Lutz. Her camel spin was very slow and
barely got in the last revolutions.
-
Alexandra Kaye - 8th
-
She fell on a triple loop, landed a triple sal out of footwork and also
a double axel. She did a change-edge spiral, held for about one third
the length of the rink, and a very slow flying sit spin.
-
Sarah Devereaux - 9th
-
(I have no notes for Sarah, because Marshall was fussing.)
-
Kristy Evan - 10th
-
Triple lutz/double toe, beautiful camel spin and layback spin. She has
very pretty positions and gorgeous line. Doubled her solo jump fell on
the axel. Very pretty spiral with very long lines.
-
J.J. Matthews - 11th
-
This is the very same rink in which J.J. won Novice Nationals in '96.
I'm afraid the rink wasn't so lucky for her last night. She wore a
lavender tank dress and skated to a classical piano piece that started
out as "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows" (which describes her career for the
past couple years). She two-footed the triple sal, but still pulled off
the double toe afterward. She doubled her solo jump, and landed the
double axel. She had a pretty footwork sequence, well timed to the
music, but she did a little stumble in the middle of it.
-
Christina Gordon - 12th
-
Nailed the double axel right off the bat then did the most gorgeous
layback in the classic positions with the ands forming a perfrect circle
over her head and a very good freeleg position, Dick Button would have
swooned. Unfortunately then she doubled the combo. Held spirals for a
long time with good speed and very nice long lines. Gorgeous toe point
in her camel spin, but she popped the loop.
-
Mackenzie Baltz - 13th
-
Wore a read showgirl out fit with a "skirt" made of fringe. Skated to
Instanbul. Dida double axle and doubled the salchow combo, fell on her
solo jump. Did a neat illusion effect with her hands in the Egyptian
pose during her combo spin.
-
Andrea Frolic - 14th place
-
Big Band Medley including Chatanooga Choo Choo and Sing, Sing, Sing. Did
a Triple sal/double toe combo with an extra turn between the jumps and a
very wobbly landing. Flying sit spin, good speed in her spiral sequence
which included a spiral which starts out with her leg in front and then
moves to back without changing edge. She doubled the jump out of
footwork and singled the axel.
