Day 2: 10-Sep-2004
Men's Short Program
Okay here is a big negative of the new COP: it takes forever. Getting
scores is taking two or three times as long as previously. The whole
event is dragged out way past the ability of my back to sit without
back support.
- Christopher Mabee - Canada
- Landed a triple axel/double toe free leg
waved around a bit, but he kept the landing. He did a loop behind that
danged post so I can't tell you anything about it. He has good speed in
his circular steps. Landed a double axel with good flow coming out of
it. Skated to the Prokofiev Romeo and Juliet, with very nice dramatic
presentation. Did some difficult 1 footed steps in his footwork
sequences.
Planned tech score 25.80 actual tech score 28.23 Program
components score 27.67 Total score 55.90
- Tatsuya Tanaka - Hong Kong
- He wore a beautiful grey and white costume.
Skated to Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto #1. Landed a triple
salchow/double toe, fell on a double axel. Did a very nice series of
moves Spread Eagle into Ina Baur into a well stretched camel spin.
Landed double loop.
Planned tech score 20.6 actual tech score 12.80
Program components score 14.00 Total score 25.80
- Andy Chen - Taipei
- Coached by Lucinda Ruh. Skated to the soundtrack
from "Speed". Held on to a double axel. Did his combo behind that
@(*#@ post so I have no idea how that went. Two footed his double
loop. Had some interesting steps in his footwork sequences.
Planned tech
score 18.60 actual tech score 15.21 Program components score 13.92 Total
score 29.13
- Adrian Schultheiss - Sweden
- Skated to Toccata and Fugue. Fast
skater. Landed a triple lutz/triple toe and a double axel. He has a fast
camel spin with good positions. Fell on his triple loop. Good
straightline step sequence. He did a cantilever.
Planned tech score
25.80 actual tech score 23.96 Program components score 25.74 Total score
49.70
- Andrew Bassi - Australia
- Landed a lutz/toe combo but I couldn't count
the revolutions. Nice position in his camel spin spin. Fell on a loop
jump. Nice positions in his combination spin. He landed an axel.
Planned
tech score 25.80 actual tech score 13.18 Program components score 16.51
Total score 28.69.
- Norman Keck - Germany
- Ina Baur into a triple loop. Fell on a
triple/double combination, behind the post so I didn't see it clearly.
Landed a double axel. Did some difficult one footed steps in his
footwork sequence. (If COP is the reason we are seeing so much one
footed footwork at this event then that is one point in COP's favor)
Planned tech score 24.1 actual tech score 20.25 Program components score
19.29 Total score 38.54
- Nobunari Oda - Japan
- I am told he skated to the music from the Mario
Brothers video game. He is Mr. Personality acting out a comic program
with great flair (think Hamilton or Hollander.) Landed triple
axel/double toe and a triple loop. His spins were pretty slow so that
probably cost him a bit.
Planned tech score 27.10 actual tech score
21.56 Program components score 28.51 Total score 50.07
- Kevin Reynolds - Canada
- Landed a triple lutz/triple toe and a triple
loop. Has really fast circular footwork, put his hand down on the axel.
Planned tech score 28.30 actual tech score 28.58 Program components
score 21.84 (I think my handwriting not too clear here) Total score
53.42
- Naoto Saito - Japan
- Skated to a heavy metal version of Malaguena, just
when I thought I couldn't hate Malaguena anymore. Fell on a triple axel.
Landed a triple jump and a double axel with good flow. He is very fast.
His footwork sequence was a bit sparse.
Planned tech score 29.8 actual
tech score 23.35 Program components score 24.17 Total score I can't read
my handwriting for his total score.
- Dennis Phan - USA
- Beautiful lines on this kid. Landed a triple
lutz/triple toe and a triple axel. He did three turns into a triple
loop, very nice sequence. Nice sit spin position. Excellent one footed
steps in his footwork sequences. That gorgeous line of his gives him
some lovely spin positions.
Planned tech score 28.30 actual tech score
30.78 Program components score 29.89 Total score 60.67
- Charlie White - USA
- Skate to some Greek music with very good presentation of
Greek dance and steps. I wrote down triple salchow pull out and I have
no idea what I meant by that. LOL I am a lousy reporter what can I say.
Landed a triple lutz/double toe and fell out of a double axel. Good
footwork sequences.
Planned tech score 28.30 actual tech score 24.83
Program components score 29.89 Total score 60.67
- Princeton Kwong - USA
- Landed a triple lutz/triple toe and a triple
loop and a double axel. The music sounded to me like something from a
Loony Tunes cartoon, very fast Flight of the Bumblebee and Chopsticks.
It was very fast but he kept up with it very well.
Planned tech score
25.6 actual tech score 26.76 Program components score 27.98 Total score
53.89
- Phanyaluck Raisuksiri - Thailand
- As many have said Thailand is in it's
skating infancy. His skating is not up to the level of the rest here.
But he skated to Singing In the Rain and he was very charming doing some
Gene Kelly bits. So I liked him a lot.
Pairs Free Skate
I didn't take notes during the Pairs. I really enjoyed the programs
of the top two teams. They had some lovely choreography, well put
together programs that clearly told a story.
- Jessica
Dube and Bryce Davison skated to both Tchaivkovsky
and Prokofieve's Romeo and Juliet.
1st
- Aaryn Smith and Will
Chitwood were lovely doing pair spread eagles and Ina Baurs, very lovely
long lined Moves In the Field. Ann and I really liked them so we figure
they have already broken up by now.
2nd
- Brittany Vise and Nicholas Kole
skated last years Pirates of The Caribbean program. She has a couple of
bad falls, so that is why they ended up moving down in the standings.
