Day 1: 9-Sep-2004
We totally missed the pairs short program. We made the mistake of
believing the directions that were on the event web site. Those
directions had us going in the completely opposite direction of the
arena. This is what you get for believing the official web site.
So we start with the Ladie's Short Program:
- Henna Hietala - Finland
- Skated a slinky jazz program. Started with
some nice stretched out moves in the field. Fell on a lutz. Did some
difficult one footed steps into a double loop. Axel was ok. She did a
camel spin that changed edges into a Forward Inside camel. It was a nice
program with good choreography.
Planned tech score was 25.3, final tech
score was 16.10, program component score was 15.66 Total Score 30.76
- Aurore Premont - Monaco
- I don't think I have ever seen a skater from
Monaco before. She landed a double axel, did a double/triple combo but
put her hands down on the second jump. Fell on a loop, this was behind a
post which I will mention a lot in my reports and I couldn't tell how
many revolutions she was attempting before the fall. Did a change edge
spiral that was a bit shaky. Did a catch foot layback spin. Did some
difficult one footed steps in her step sequence. Finished way behind her
music.
Planned tech score 23.71, final tech score 15.63. Program
component score 12.42 Total score 27.05
- Maria Fernanda Diaz Valle - Mexico
- Fell on a double axel. Nice
position in her camel spin. Fell on a jump I couldn't see clearly. Did a
back Bielman spiral into a forward Bielman spiral. Fell on a loop.
Planned tech score 15.2, final tech score 11.08. Program components
10.57 Total score 20.65
- Monica Boucher - Canada
- Started with some pretty, well extended moves
in the field. She did a triple/double combo that she spun out of. Fell
on a triple loop. Fell on the double axel. Finished behind her music
(there was a lot of that going on at this event for some reason.)
Planned tech score 23.30, final tech score 18,82. Program components
16.82, total score 33.64.
- Kimmie Meissner - USA
- Very pretty opening moves. Triple lutz/double
toe, hand down on the lutz. She did some beautiful one footed glides.
Triple loop was fine. Fast layback spin. Butterflies into a combo spin
and she did footwork into her double axel.
Planned tech score 25.3,
final tech score 23.54, program components 22.79 total score 46.33
- Amelie Lacoste - Canada
- Landed a triple loop. She fell on a triple lutz which
was very tilted in the air and now way she could have landed. She did a
fast change edge spiral and a Charlotte. Landed double axel. Camel spin
traveled quite a bit.
Planned tech score 25.3, final tech score was
22.53, program components 19.79, total score was 41.32
- Kirsten Verbist - Belgium
- Wore a very pretty pink and white dress.
Opened with a pretty layback spin. She fell behind that dang post so I
don't know what she fell on. She stepped out of another jump I didn't
see clearly. Fell on the double axel.
Planned: 23.8, tech score: 13.58, components: 13.01, total: 24.59
- Rachel Kapelner - Israel
- Skated to Cirque Du Soleil. Fell on a double
axel. Put her hand down on the loop and singled the salchow. She did a
Bielman spiral and an inside edge camel with a nice position change.
Ended with a well extended Bielman spin she has a very pretty smile.
Planned: 23.8, tech score: 11.3, components: 12.43, total: 22.73
- Danielle Kahle - USA
- She wore a flower in her hair it was very cute. She did
a tango dance with lots of nice steps. Landed double axel and triple
loop with nice flow. Fast camel spin, all her spins are better this
year. Fell on the lutz. Fast layback spin, change edge spiral with good
speed. Nice extension in her moves.
Planned tech score 25.3, final tech score 21.08, program
components 19.47 total score 39.55
- Rumi Suizu - Japan
- First skater I have seen yet to take advantage of
the new rule allowing skaters to wear pants. However she wore low rider
pants and a halter top giving the impression of a go-go dancer not a
world class athlete. So those who think that pants will help skaters to
be taken seriously as athletes, well not this way. (And why I am on the
subject of one of my favorite rants, why is that the sequins and make-up
of skaters is supposed to detract from their athleticism but no one says
that about the dang near nudity of beach volleyball players?) Anyway
back to the actual skating. She landed a triple lutz/double toe that was
cheated or something, I can not tell these things as well as others but
I am pretty sure that thing did not get the full rotation, ditto for the
triple loop she did. She has very good good speed. She did a change edge
spiral, and a back spiral, three turn forward spiral. Fell on the double
axel.
Planned tech score 23.3, final tech score 17.23. Program
components 18.04 total score 34.27
- Matilda Rang - Sweden
- She landed a very high double axel. She has
good speed. Landed a triple salchow/double toe. Popped the loop.
Planned score 23.8. Her actual tech score was 18.9. Program
components were 17.74, total score 36.64.
- Cara Kinney - USA
- Skated to Memory from Cats. Landed a double loop and
a high double axel. Landed a triple salchow/double toe combination, but
the landing was very low with a bent knee. She is just out of novice so
her technical difficulty was not up there with the top skaters, but her
program was lovely and well delivered. She has nice stretch in her camel
spin. She has a nice footwork sequence.
Planned tech score was 20.3,
her actual tech score was 18.48. Her program components were 17.88 her
total score was 36.36.
- Sharon Resseler - The Netherlands
- (Why is Holland called "The
Netherlands" now? No, I am serious I have always wanted to know this,
someone e-mail me and let me know.) She landed a triple salchow/double
toe combination, a triple loop with a shaky landing and fell on the
axel. Music was Malguena. She did a side layback spin that had a very
nice deep arch. Tech score was 12.47 program components is 15.05 and
total score was 26.52.
- Martina Sasanelli - Italy
- Skated to West Side Story. Landed a double
axel. Nice position and speed in her camel spin. Fell on a triple
salchow, landed double loop. Cute smile.
Planned tech 20.3 actual tech
16.01, program components 15.53 total score 30.54
- Na-Hee Sin - Korea
- Music Sing, Sing, Sing. Fell on something behind that post
so I didn't see what it was. Landed a double axel and a double loop. I
seem to have liked her change edge spiral but I can't really tell what
my notes are saying. She did a layback spin that started out side
leaning and switched to back leaning, have not seen that very much it
was very good. Good footwork sequence.
Planned tech 20.3, actual tech
16.3, program components 15.59 total score 30.89
- Mao Asada - Japan
- I am told that she is not Mai Asada as listed in the
program. Whoever she was she was marvelous, head and shoulders above the
rest. I hereby officially change Japan's nickname to The Land of Rising
Skatey Girls. Program was Wizard of Oz. Landed triple lutz/double loop
but stepped out of the loop. Landed a double axel. She did a nice
combination spin that included illusion. Did these cool twister spins
during the "the twister" part of the music. Half way through I stopped
taking notes and just enjoyed a splendid program filled with footwork,
and transitions and character. She did a triple at the end that I have
no idea what kind.
Planned tech score 25.5 actual tech score 26.74,
program components 23.4 total 49.14.
Richard has a cold so we did not stay to see the final flight.
