2001 Worlds Men's Short Program
Quad, quad, quad, quad, quad, quad! I have completely lost track of how
many quads I saw this evening. It was an exciting, even amazing evening,
except for Japan and Canada. That is the sad part of skating, someone
always loses.
-
Australia - Anthony Liu
- Landed a quad toe/double toe combo, triple
axel and triple lutz. His footwork was slo. He had nice line and he was
all around much better than when I saw him in 98.
-
Belarus - Sergei Davydov
- Landed a double axel/double toe combo,
stepped out of the toe. Landed a double lutz and double axel. He was a
good spinner with a fast combination spin.
-
Romania - Gheorge Chiper
- Triple axel with a step out. Triple
lutz/triple toe and triple flip. He was very happy at the end of his
program and pumped his fist.
-
Ukraine - Dmitiri Dmitrenko
- Two footed a triple lutz, triple axel was
fine. Nice speed and positions in his sit spin. He had very good,
difficult footwork done with a real flourish.
-
Italy - Angelo Dolfini
- This kid has great personality and really
presents it to the audience. He did a triple/triple combination that he
really had to fight to land, kneeled down and sort of spun around, but
by gum he didn't fall or two foot. Landed another triple jump and a
double axel. He started his program with this fabulous diagonal footwork
all done on one foot, excellent.
-
China - Chengjiang Li
- Hit a truly beautiful quad toe triple
axle/triple toe and a double axel. He was very fast, went out very
aggressively and really attacked that program.
-
Bulgaria - Ivan Dinev
- Triple axle/double toe with a two footed toe. A
triple jump and a double axel. He had a very nice sit spin with good
speed and nice straight position.
-
Azerbaijain (sp) - Sergei Rylov
- Skated to a waltz. Landed a triple
axel/double toe, triple lutz and double axel. He had nice line
especially in his camel spin. Was thrilled after her skated.
-
Switzerland - Patrick Meier
- Barely held on to a triple lutz, landed
triple axel/double toe and double axel. Had very nice footwork.
-
Germany - Stefan Lindemann
- Triple axle, hand down/double toe. Double
axel and unfortunately I could not take notes on the rest of his
program.
-
Ukraine - Vitali Danilchenko
- Popped a triple axel, landed a triple lutz
with a couple of hops and landed a double axel. Very cool straight line
footwork with a couple of turns down on one knee. Great speed and
extension in his camel spin.
-
China - Yunfei Li
- Did a lovely little waltz programs.Quad toe/triple
toe, triple axel, triple lutz. Unbelievable flow coming out of those
jumps, a very "wow" inspiring jumper.
-
Japan - Yamato Tamura
- Oh this was so sad! Skated to Moonlight Sonata.
Popped his first jump, fell on a death drop, did triple lutz/triple toe
and fell on the toe. He looked devastated after he skated. I felt so bad
for him.
-
Canada - Emanuel Sadhu
- He blew the quad and the triple axel. And then
went on to put on a great show with his spins and footwork. The crowd
ate up everything he could give them and he really presented that
program as well as he could without the jumps.
-
China - Min Zhang
- Fell out of a triple axel but landed the quad/triple.
Does every man in China have a quad? Landed a triple lutz.
-
Russia - Alexi Yagudin
- Talk about coming through in the clutch. He
landed everything though the quad/triple was too close to the boards.
Then through himself into the program with great passion and intensity.
The audience was off it's feet before his music stopped.
-
Russia - Alexander Abt
- Landed triple axel/triple toe, double axel and
two footed a quad.
By this point there was so much energy in the building it was
exhausting. We had already seen some amazingly great skates and yet the
best was still to come. I took hardly any notes in the final flight, but
I didn't need to. It was unforgettable.
-
Russia - Evgeni Plushenko
- Wow! He went out and skated that program
beautifully, nailed everything and even had time for a little gratuitous
but wiggling. I thought Yags was better, but just by a hair.
-
USA - Timothy Goebel
- "2001: a skating Odyssey" ... Lori Nichol has definitely
improved his musicality and his footwork. Landed quad sal/triple toe,
triple axel and triple lutz.
-
Japan - Takeshi Honda
- Weep! I love Takeshi, he has everything I love,
line, musicality, expression. He also has nerves of tissue paper, he
blew the quad and the axel.
-
Canada - Elvis Stojko
- And the crowd went wild cheering for their king.
And then their king went splat on his quad and axel. The crowd still
cheered madly when he was done and even gave him a partial standing O.
-
USA - Todd Eldredge
- Tomorrow the American papers will crucify for
"playing it safe." Well stuff it American reporters! Todd has the best
spins and edges on the ice. His overall quality is matched only by
Yagudin and he did what he had to do. He landed triple flip/triple toe,
triple axel and a triple lutz out of actual footwork. He got through the
short and is now positioned to win this thing. Strategy is as important
in sports as performance. His circular steps were a little slow, but his
final spin was a blur. He got a rousing standing ovation.
Wow what a night! I would have to say it was the best men's short I have
ever seen.
